Obits Thursday, January 16, 2003 Joseph V. Toohill WAPELLA -- Joseph V. Toohill, 94, of 472 S. Apple, Farmington, formerly of Wapella, died at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 14, 2003) at his residence. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Farmington, Father Bruce King officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Farmington. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Anderson-Sedgwick Funeral Home, Farmington, with rosary recited at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to Farmington Veterans Memorial Fund; the Oak Ridge Cemetery Blacktop Fund; or the Farmington Rescue Squad. He was born Jan. 22, 1908, in Wapella, a son of Edward F. and Anna Burns Toohill. He married Juanita M. Taggart on Dec. 31, 1938, at Visitation Church in Kewanee. She survives. Survivors include one son, Joseph V. (Diane) Toohill Jr., Farmington; two daughters, Judith A. Toohill, Canton; and Jeanne C. Flaherty, Dallas; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Teresa Toohill, LeRoy. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and five sisters. He was assistant state's attorney in Fulton County in 1931. He was an attorney in private practice in Toohill Law Office for 66 years in Farmington. He was a member of St. Matthew's Church, Farmington, for 70 years. He graduated from St. Louis University School of Law in 1931. He was admitted to practice law in 1931. He was charter member of the Farmington Rotary in 1935; was a Paul Harris Fellow; and was past president of the Farmington Rotary Club. He was past president and chairman of the board of directors of the Bank of Farmington. He was a World War II Navy veteran, where he served as a lieutenant from 1943 to 1945. He mainly served in the North Atlantic. He then served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1945 to 1958. He was a member of the Farmington American Legion Post 140. He was a member of the Canton Voiture 812, 40 and 8 where he was a past Grand Avocat. He was a 3rd Degree Knight of the Farmington Knights of Columbus, Daniel Sheehan Council. He was a 4th Degree Knight of the Canton Knights of Columbus, Spoon River Assembly. He was a member of the Canton Country Club, the Farmington Moose Lodge 1571, the Canton Elks, and the Travelers Protection Agency. He was a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the Fulton County Bar Association. |
