Killed By A Stallion
Lawrence Strange was killed at a station near Danville,Ill., being trampled to death by cattle which he was shipping to Clinton. The accident occurred at Gloa, a station near Danville, where he was having his goods transferred to the interurban lines.
Mr. Strange went to Missouri about a year ago, not being satisfied with the country, decided to return to Clinton.
He was last seen alive about 1:30 Monday morning. Two hours later when his car was being transferred from the C.& E.I. at Glover, his foot was seen protruding from the car t the door and he was found to be dead. When taken from the car the side of his head had the marks of a horse too, showing he had been kicked. There were three horses, a colt, and some cattle in the car besides the household goods. One of the horses was a stallion and he was not tied. It is thought this horse kicked Mr. Strange. This was the verdict of the coroner's jury of Vermillion county. No blame was placed on the railroad company.
There were nearly $90 in Mr, Strange's pockets.
Henry L. Strange was the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.C.Strange, of Texas township, and was born on Feb. 19,1871. He was married to Miss Anna Mahony, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abrain Mohny, formerly of DeWitt county. His wife and three children survive hime. Ora, the eldest is 17, Charles, 14, and Rilda, 10 years old. The former had been here several weeks husking corn; the others and their mother arrived Sunday. Before moving to Birch Tree, MO., the family lived northwest of Clinton several years.
The remains, accompanied by relatives who went to Danville soon as they learned of the accident arrived here Tuesday at 10 o'clock and was taken to the home of the parents of deceased where funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.F. Rosborough. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery.

Historic Name: Elizabeth Harding House
Common Name: Oliver Binney House
County/Town/City: Loudon County
Street address or route number: Route 671
Date or period: Mid 19th c.
The original log house appears to have been a two-room plan, 1-1/2 story structure with exterior end stone and stucco chimneys. Logs are V-notched. Hewn floor joists are exposed. The cellar joists are untrimmed and the plank flooring appears original. A stone, 1-1/2 story addition has a cooking fireplace in an interior end stone and stucco chimney. A new roof and much of the second floor of the log section is modern. The interior has been extensively remodeled and exterior additions have altered the original character of the building.
The house is designated as the "E. Harding" house on the Yardley Taylor Map of Loudon County in 1854. Elizabeth Harding bought the property from Peter Demory in 1843. (D.B.2A,p.385).
Directions to the Farmstead from Leesburg: Turn onto route 9 and head west toward Mechanicsburg. At Mechanicburgs, turn north onto route 671. About one-half mile up on the left you should spot the Salem Church cemetery. About another half mile further is a gravel road on the right side. The gravel road has a pair of corner fences with the word "Farfield" carved into a rail. Head down this gravel road. You should first pass a barn-like structure on the left, then a house on the right. Go to the end of the gravel road. There you will find the log cabin on the left of the driveway.

Notes for Matthew Steen:
Matthew Steen was one of several children of Richard Steen who was a descendent of a Scotch Covenanter minister who came into Ireland with Oliver Cromwell and others about 1649. Although Matthew was born in Ireland near Coleraine, County Antrim, he was of Scotch lineage, not Irish. Matthew came with his family to America as a baby in 1755. The family first came to New York. Later, Matthew's brothers, James and William settled in Union District, South Carolina; Matthew and brother Robert, settled in Pennsylvania. In 1780, Matthew and Jane moved to Canonsburg, PA.

Notes for John Wilson Scott:
JOHN WILSON SCOTT -- REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER
Contributed by Dorothy (Strange) Martin & Marie (Strange) Hastings, both descendents of John Wilson Scott.
From the time John Wilson Scott was born in York County,Pennsylvania in 1763 to the time of his death on 13 march 1847 in DeWitt County, Illinois, he had fought in the Revolutionary War, been married twice, lived in six states, and fathered fifteen children.
He was of Scottish ancestry, the son of John and Anna (Wilson) Scott, who owned land on the Holstein River in Washington County, Virginia. His grandfather was Andrew Scott, whose will was proved 29 January 1794, Colrain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Family tradition says that John Wilson Scott's first marriage was to Ann Crayton (or Clayton) and that their daughter Elizabeth married John Matson (or Maston). Nothing else is known of this time.
His second marriage was to Nancy Keith, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Liddell) Keith, about the year 1786. It is easy to trace the migration of this family of John and Nancy Scott by noting the birthplaces of their children. The first, Andrew, was born in N.C.; John, Jr., Alexander, Anna, jame K., Wm. K., and Ruth was born in S.C. 1788-1799;
Martin was born in Jackson County, Tennessee; and Samuel was born in Crawford County, Indiana in 1818. From there the family came to Sa ngamon County, Illinois about 1820. The next move was to what was then Tazewell County, Illinois in 1827. By a chance of county boundary line, they became residents of McLean County in 1830; and by the same process they became citizins of DeWitt County in 1839, all without having moved from the land they had located on in present-day Wapella Township.
John Wilson Scott saw his sons become productive citizens. They were farmers. James Keith Scott made one of the first land entries in what is now DeWitt County, when he located in section 27, Waynesville Township. John, Jr., James K., Martin, and Andrew were ministers of the Christian Church. James K. preached the first sermon in the township in the cabin of one of the settlers. Later he helped establish the first church, Rock Creek. Built in 1837, it was the first frame building in Waynesville Township. The lumber for it was hauled from Atlanta, IL. James K. Scott also served as a state legislator for two terms (1842-1846).
The final resting place for John Wilson Scott, his wife, and several of his children and other descendents is Rock Creek Cemetery, located in section 26, Waynesville Township. On 3 December 1970, the DeWitt Clinton Chapter D.A.R. placed a marker on the grave of the old soldier. Twelve members of the chapter have traced their lineage to him.
One of the many descendents of the soldier, Abbie Lane Whitaker, wrote a play, "Out Beyond Middletown," which described the life of the early Scott pioneers in the Waynesville area. The play won the one-act play competition sponsered by the Arts Committee of the Illinois Sesquicen- tennial Commission in 1968.
Because so many of her ancestors were buried there, Mrs. Whitaker often visited Rock Creek Cemetery. Accompanying her on many of the visits was her daughter, Frances Moriearty, who was inspired to write the following sonnet about the significance of these visits.
