Donald L. Soeder Sr.
1938 - 2006

It is with great sorrow that the Soeder family announces the death of loving husband and father Donald L. Soeder Sr. on June 16, 2006, after a brief illness.

Don was born July 31, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Clara and Edward Soeder of Bohemian and German descent. He was the youngest of seven children. Don attended parochial school from grades 1 through 8 and graduated from Cleveland's East High in 1956. After high school, Don took his first job as a shipping clerk at H.N. White Co. It was there that he met the love of his life, Alice. They were married five months later and for their honeymoon came to California by way of Canada. They resided in Inglewood. In California, Don worked various jobs in shipping and then became a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service. In 1968, the couple, with their children, moved to Simi Valley and became active members of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. To further his education, Don attended Moorpark College. In 1969, Don accepted a position in the Westlake Village regional office of State Farm Insurance, where he enjoyed a 35-year career in the data processing and computer field. He retired in February 2004.

The primary focus of Don's life was his family, always putting their needs above his own. A deeply devoted father to his three children, he involved himself in many of their activities from school age to present time. He was active in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and taught catechism classes at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in the 1970s. He enthusiastically welcomed his first grandchild, Isaac, to the family in 2002 and loved his new role as "Papa."

Don and his wife, Alice, loved to travel up the Central California coastline, spending much of their time watching the sea otters from the beaches of San Simeon. In 1986, they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows at the Old Santa Rosa Chapel in Cambria, Calif.

Don had a passion for movies, a love of gardening and was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians. All who knew Don will miss his unparalleled sense of humor and kind heart.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Alice; son and daughter-in-law, Donny and Melissa Soeder; grandson, Isaac; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Tom Shaghnessy; daughter Jane; children of the heart, Pablo Quijada and Bambi Soeder; sister, Rosemary Sherwood; brother, Mick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, with a vigil and recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m., at Valley Oaks-Griffin Mortuary in Westlake Village. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 22, at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Simi Valley. Enterment will follow at Assumption Cemetery in Simi Valley.

Arrangements are under the direction of Valley Oaks-Griffin Mortuary, Westlake Village.
